Title: The Dignified Gunshot: Female Identity Construction and Ethical Dilemma in 'night, Mother
Abstract: 'night, Mother, as the seminal work of American playwright Marsha Norman, has established its canonical status in 20th-century feminist theatre through minimalist staging and profound philosophical depth since its 1979 Broadway premiere. This study centers on 'night, Mother to investigate female identity formation and ethical quandaries. Within the dimension of female identity formation, the study dissects ontological alienation induced by societal role discipline alongside epistemological tensions within self-cognition. Within the presentation of ethical quandaries, it explores quandaries concerning bioethics, family ethics, and gender ethics. the research further excavates the impact of female identity formation on ethical quandaries and the reciprocal impact of ethical quandaries on female identity formation, thereby illuminating women’s existential states and psychological conflicts within complex social and familial contexts.
