Title: Body Politics and Artificial Intelligence Metaphors in Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde

Abstract: Robert Stevenson’s Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886) has long been regarded as a classic text exploring identity, self, and the split personality. However, the body politics and artificial intelligence metaphors embedded within it have not received sufficient attention. This paper analyzes Dr Jekyll’s bodily transformation and discipline through drug experiments, exploring how scientific practices subvert the traditional unity of mind and body and shape a deformed embodiment. It also serves as a warning for the new power challenges in the development of contemporary embodied intelligence. By examining how Hyde encroaches upon and backlashes against Jekyll, it reveals the threat of human creations to subjectivity and the dilemmas in the development of contemporary artificial intelligence. This paper re-explores the contemporary value of Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, providing new avenues for thinking about subjectivity and bodily boundaries in the age of artificial intelligence.
