Title: Silence and Speech: The Metaphorical Construction of Female Community in Obasan from the Perspective of Collective Memory

AbstractThis paper, situated within the framework of Halbwachs’ theory of collective memory, critically examines the metaphorical construction of the female community in Obasan. Through an analysis of the distinct functions of silence and speech in the intergenerational transmission of memory, the study illuminates how women bear and convey traumatic memories through both non-verbal and verbal forms, thereby sustaining group identity and cultural continuity. The interaction between silence and speech not only underscores the diverse strategies employed by the female community in confronting historical trauma, but also demonstrates its pivotal role in the transmission of collective memory and the reconstruction of group identity.
