Title: Exploring the Meaning of Existence Through Mapping: A Review of Fang Ying’s Spatial Literary Criticism

Abstract: The emergence of the “spatial turn” within the fields of Western humanities and social sciences has led to the growing significance of “spatial literary studies” in literary academics. Spatial Literary Criticism, Professor Fang Ying’s new monograph, is founded on the theoretical advancements associated with the spatial turn. Grounded in rigorous literary text analysis, it presents innovative theoretical developments and opens up a novel domain within literary studies. This work synthesizes multi-disciplinary spatial theories and introduces the concept of “spatial literary criticism”. It addresses several critical issues in this research field, including the main types of space in literature, the issues of space and power, space and existence, as well as the research paradigm and the problematic of spatial literary criticism. The book presents a range of implications that extend across various dimensions, particularly in the realms of literary studies, spatial criticism, literature and the world, and literature and existence.
