Title:Hulijing, Steam and Magic: An Ecocritical Study on Good Hunting

Abstract: Ken Liu’s science fiction novel Good Hunting reimagines ancient Chinese hulijing mythology in a steampunk mode, demonstrating three core imageries—the hulijing, steam, and magic—to critique the dual violence of colonial modernity against nature and culture from an ecocritical perspective. This paper employs theories mainly including deep ecology, ecofeminism, and ecological colonialism to analyze the text’s allegorical reflection of contemporary ecological crises, offering a detailed ecological reinterpretation of this classic speculative fiction to provide provoking thoughts about difficult ecological and social issues.

Keywords: Good Hunting, Ken Liu, science fiction, ecocriticism
